Hydrangea macrophylla 'Libelle'

  • 'Libelle' is undoubtedly one of the very finest hydrangeas. A lacecap variety of 'bigleaf' (macrophylla) hydrangea, this cultivar boasts flowers consisting of a ring of outer white florets, encircling a dense mass of smaller blue or pink florets (the colour often depends on soil pH).
  • Alongside the lovely blooms, this shrub produces large, glossy green leaves up to 20cm in length. These serve as a wonderful backdrop against which the flowers can really come to the fore.
  • Plant your hydrangea as part of a coastal planting scheme, a classic cottage garden or interplant it with foliage plants to create a woodland wonderland. You could even pot up your hydrangea in a large container to give your patio some extra visual oomph.
  • Cut your flowers and add them to a bouquet along with some roses and peonies. Or add them to a vase on their own, they're certainly worthy enough!
  • A deserving recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Libelle' has been shown to perform exceptionally well in British gardens.
