Canary Island Date Palm | Phoenix canariensis

  • A stunning palm that instantly evokes memories of sun-soaked holidays abroad, Phoenix canariensis is unquestionably one of the showiest species of palm out there.
  • Growing to 15m tall after 20 years or so, this eye-catching plant boasts a squat, pinecone-like trunk and huge, fanning leaves, each up to five metres in length and divided into many spiky, linear leaflets.
  • In summer, drooping creamy flower panicles emerge, adding an air of elegance and breezy charm to the plant's spiky green foliage. Lush.
  • Following on from the flowers in the autumn, this palm becomes wreathed in myriad yellowish-orange fruits which, although only ornamental, add yet another layer of impact to this already-impactful plant.
  • Though mature Canary Island date palms display good tolerance to the cold, younger specimens should be protected with horticultural fleece during cold snaps in winter. This palm is best-suited to more temperate parts of the UK (such as the south-west).
